FlavourFresh introduces Tomalina: a new way to rediscover tomatoes
Tomatoes are one of the most diverse categories in fresh produce, yet the richness of their flavours, textures and culinary character is not always apparent to consumers at the point of purchase.

Tomatoes are one of the most diverse categories in fresh produce, yet the richness of their flavours, textures and culinary character is not always apparent to consumers at the point of purchase.
That simple observation inspired British grower FlavourFresh to develop Tomalina in close partnership with vegetable breeding company Harmoniz. Bringing together three distinctive tomato varieties in one flavour-led collection, Tomalina was conceived as a new way of approaching the tomato category, inviting consumers to choose tomatoes according to the eating experience they are looking for, rather than simply by type or appearance.
"As growers and tomato lovers, we know that every great tomato has its own character. Our ambition wasn't simply to introduce another premium tomato range, but to make the diversity of tomatoes easier to understand, more inspiring to explore and ultimately more enjoyable to eat. We wanted to move beyond choosing tomatoes simply by type or appearance and instead inspire people to choose them for the flavour, character and culinary experience they bring to the table. That's the thinking that inspired Tomalina," said David Barker of FlavourFresh.
Bringing that vision to life required close collaboration between FlavourFresh and Harmoniz. Together, the two companies developed the concept behind Tomalina, combining consumer insight, breeding expertise and cultivation know-how from the earliest stages of development. From the outset, the ambition was never simply to identify exceptional varieties, but to curate a collection in which every tomato had a distinct role.
The result is a distinctive, Lancashire-grown collection that invites consumers into a world of discovery, where every tomato reveals its own landscape of flavour, texture, colour, aroma and culinary possibilities.
Tomarella captures the nostalgic familiarity of a classic garden tomato. Firm yet juicy, it delivers a bright sweet-tangy freshness that's perfect for sandwiches or gently charred on the grill.
Tom Violet adds an exotic twist to the flavour experience, combining a succulent texture with deep aromatic sweetness and striking violet tones that bring vibrancy and elegance to salads or roasted dishes.
TomRuby reveals a richer, more comforting side of the collection. Fleshy, velvety and full of depth, it unfolds beautifully in slow-cooked sauces, soups and generous home cooking.
Together, the three varieties demonstrate how breeding innovation, growing expertise and consumer insight can come together in a single innovative concept.
"Seeing Tomalina on supermarket shelves is incredibly rewarding because it proves consumers are ready to explore tomatoes differently. If we can help people discover that one tomato isn't simply another tomato, we've achieved exactly what we set out to do. We believe that's good for consumers, good for retailers and ultimately good for the category as a whole," concluded David Barker.
Tomalina reached consumers for the first time in early June, with ASDA becoming the first retailer to introduce the collection across the UK. The launch has already attracted industry recognition, with Tomalina shortlisted as a finalist in the Great British Food Awards 2026, underlining the concept's innovative approach to flavour-led tomato discovery.
For FlavourFresh, this recognition marks another important milestone for a concept born from a shared belief: that helping consumers better understand the remarkable diversity of tomatoes is the best way to unlock the category's full potential.
