Salderton is Harmoniz’s latest Roma-type tomato introduction for the current season. The variety is designed for medium-short crop cycles and stands out for its uniform fruit shape, large calibre (L), and strong, continuous fruit-setting capacity.

With Salderton, Harmoniz expands its Roma-type tomato portfolio with a variety featuring high resistance (HR) to Tomato Brown Rugose Fruit Virus (ToBRFV). Depending on the growing area and transplanting date, the variety is suitable for medium-short cycles and has demonstrated good adaptability across a wide range of production conditions.

“We carried out trials from El Ejido to Níjar, with transplanting dates from mid-August through September, and in all cases the variety performed consistently well, maintaining its agronomic performance and fruit-quality characteristics,” says Mauricio Fernández, General Manager at Harmoniz Iberia.

From an agronomic perspective, Salderton features an open and compact plant structure with medium-short internodes, facilitating crop management. The variety shows a strong and continuous fruit set throughout the entire cycle, including during the colder months.

The trusses are uniform, with a high fruit load. Fruits are large-sized (L), uniform, with thick walls that provide good firmness and an average weight of 150–160 grams. Oval-elongated in shape, Salderton maintains an intense, bright red colour, even under winter growing conditions.

“At low temperatures, many varieties tend to develop pointed fruit tips, while Salderton maintains a well-filled, attractive fruit shape,” Fernández explains. “This variety has the potential to make a real difference in the market.”

In addition to its high resistance to ToBRFV, Salderton has shown good tolerance to common physiological disorders, with no observed issues related to blotching, cracking, microcracking or blossom-end rot (BER), offering greater security for both growers and commercialisation.

Looking ahead

With the launch of Salderton, Harmoniz continues to strengthen its tomato portfolio, while its breeding programme remains active across all segments, with a strong focus on high resistance to ToBRFV.

“Our breeding work covers the full tomato range, with varieties at different stages of development, from large-fruited types to specialty segments,” Fernández says. “Looking ahead to next season, we plan to introduce a truss tomato suitable for both loose and on-the-vine harvest, a new mini-plum, and a new cherry on the vine, all with high resistance to ToBRFV.”

“2026 will be a key year for us. Our goal is to be present in all segments with competitive, well-adapted varieties,” Fernández concludes.
