Harmoniz has entered the Roma tomato segment with Salderton, a new variety featuring high resistance (HR) to Tomato Brown Rugose Fruit Virus (ToBRFV). Adapted to medium-to-short production cycles, depending on the growing region and transplanting window, Salderton has demonstrated excellent adaptability across a wide range of growing conditions.
In addition to its high resistance to ToBRFV, providing greater security for both growers and marketers, Salderton shows no issues with blotching, fruit cracking, microcracking, or blossom-end rot (BER).
From an agronomic standpoint, Salderton features a compact, open plant structure with medium-short internodes, facilitating crop management and labor efficiency. The variety maintains strong, continuous fruit set throughout the production cycle, even under colder conditions.
Salderton produces uniform trusses with a high fruit load. The fruits are consistently large, with thick walls that deliver excellent weight and firmness, averaging 150–160 g. Their elongated oval shape and attractive, glossy deep-red color are maintained even during winter production.
Mauricio Fernández, General Manager of Harmoniz Ibérica, explained that “while other tomatoes tend to develop pointed ends under low temperatures, Salderton maintains an attractive fruit shape with excellent fill.” He added, “we believe this variety will set a new benchmark in the market.”
“We have conducted trials from El Ejido to Níjar with transplanting dates from mid-August through September,” Fernández explained. “Across all conditions, the variety has shown very strong performance while consistently maintaining its key quality characteristics.”
More innovation ahead
Salderton marks another step forward in the ongoing expansion of Harmoniz’s tomato portfolio. In fact, the seed company confirmed that it continues to develop new varieties with high resistance to ToBRFV across all tomato segments.
“We are working across the entire range, with varieties at different stages of development, from large-size tomatoes to specialties,” Fernández explained. He also revealed that next season the company plans to launch a new dual-purpose TOV tomato, a mini-plum tomato, and a cherry tomato OTV, all with high resistance to ToBRFV.
“2026 will be a major year for us, as we will have competitive varieties across every segment,” Fernández concluded.
